Cultivating Happiness Within
It wasn’t until I recognized what didn't make me happy that I was able to identify what did.
I learned how to stop wanting something outside of myself to make me happy and instead found it within.
As the days grow colder, darkness creeps in a little sooner, trees begin to shed their once vibrantly colored leaves and mother nature nudges the world to retreat and rest. I thought, what a perfect opportunity to share some inspiration I recently had after a client call.
Before we dig in, it's important to define “what is happiness really?” Typically, happiness can be defined as an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, content and fulfillment. While happiness may have many definitions, it is often described as involving positive emotions and life satisfaction.
For me, I spent many years looking outside of myself for happiness, often looking for validation in the wrong places - was I smart enough, fit enough, pretty enough, kind enough, faithful enough, was I enough as I am - the list goes on. At times, all I could imagine was if I just had that thing or job or home or looked a certain way, then I’ll be happy. I was living outside of myself in a future that didn’t exist. It wasn’t until I recognized what didn't make me happy that I was able to identify what did.
Through beginning a mindful meditation and self reflection practice, I learned that all I needed was already within me. I had the power to access and cultivate my own happiness. My desire for outside validation led me to explore and experience true happiness. I learned how to stop wanting something outside of myself to make me happy and instead found it within.
If it serves you, I invite you to take a moment to pause and reflect on the last time you truly felt a sense of happiness - where were you, who was with you if anyone, and what were you doing? Then, peel back another layer - what emotions or feelings showed up: peace, content, gratitude, connection? Take it one step further - can you remember how your body responded? Possibly feeling like you took a huge exhale, light, relaxed, spacious, energized. What was it about this moment in your life that brought you pure, unfiltered happiness?
I get it can feel a little uncomfortable, overwhelming or even silly and selfish to dig into your own internal happiness meter but, believe me, it is one of the most powerful ways to connect with yourself and use it as a guidepost for life. What better way to live life than a truly happy, joyous one. Even when the shit hits the fan, you can always come home to your happiness - it builds resilience and trust in yourself.
Below, I gathered some of my favorite ways to cultivate happiness within. Adapt as you need, as this is just an offering. Check in and notice what feels true, aligned and supportive for you and then leave the rest behind. I acknowledge that we are all as unique as a thumbprint and what may work for me may not for others.
Deep Connection & Disconnecting From Devices: spending time with friends, family, fur babes, like minded individuals, limiting time on social media
Being in Nature: mindful movement, walking or hiking
Be Kind to Yourself and Others: speaking to yourself with compassion, give back to others
Forgiveness of Self: letting go of mistakes and failures so that you can move on and learn with an open & playful mind
Practicing Mindfulness: focusing on the present moment and being thankful for the small things in life, noticing thoughts, surroundings and feelings with curiosity & compassion
Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others: comparison is the thief of joy (more to come on this topic)
You are deserving of happiness. My hope is that, through learning what truly makes you happy, you’ll feel a greater sense of purpose and meaning. When happiness comes from within, it means there is an ability to find pleasure through one’s own thoughts and actions rather than an outside source. The great news is happiness is a skill that can be learned, and happiness is contagious. Happiness influences the people we surround ourselves with. It has the ability to leave a lasting imprint on the hearts and minds of those closest to us.
If you feel inspired to share, I’d love to hear from you - how do you cultivate happiness within and how has your personal happiness created a greater sense of wellbeing in your life?
